Meet the Tiles

What you'll get from this lesson: Recognize every tile in the set on sight — the three suits, the Winds and Dragons, the Flowers, and the joker.

Before we play, let’s get to know the pieces. A set has 152 tiles. That sounds like a lot, but they fall into just a handful of easy groups, and you’ll recognize them all faster than you expect.

The American Mahjong Tile Set
SuitDots (circles) — numbered 1 to 9, four of each. Look for circles.
